Civil Engineering Challenge: Posted June 2012
Hi Steve,
I hope you are keeping well. I thought you might like to hear the following story...(feel free to pass it on to any other people involved in the engineering challenge if you wish!)
Recently playing football I happened to play against an ex-student Ben Blagg. Before the match we had a catch-up and part of our discussion centred around the Civil Engineering Challenge. Ben was one of the members of the 4 man team that won the first edition of the event in 2006. Ben still recalls this fondly and it prompted Ben to gain a career in Civil Engineering. What did please me was to hear that the other 3 team members (Andrew Laws, Carl Bowen-Price, Rachel Bowen-Price) are all working in Civil Engineering too!
I hope this message proves to be heart-warming and shows that the challenge has proven to be a real inspiration.

K'Nex Challenge - May 2012
Dear Ann. We had a very successful K'Nex challenge with Dayle Bayliss our STEM Ambassador, on 25th May. Thank you for giving us the idea and for getting the ball rolling. Dayle has very kindly offered to judge our Crest projects in July. I don't think we have sent you a photo and an article for your magazine yet. One of the pupils is 'in charge' of publicity, we'll try to get something for you later this week. Would you also like some photos of our 'Paralympic K'Nex buggies' ? Many thanks. Kind Regards

Work Clubs - May 2012
Hi Andy.
I would like to express my gratitude, for your help and support during our year 11 work club sessions at Chantry High School.
I feel that the students gained a great deal of knowledge from your programme which has enabled them to gain a good route from school.
As a result of your guidance, we are pleased to tell you, that five of our students have already been offered places on apprenticeship placements or have gained full time employment, with other offers pending.
We hope that we can continue to work with you in the future.
With Kind Regards.
Lindsey-Ann Falconer, Chantry High School
Jenni
Could you pass on our thanks to yourself and the whole team who put together the F-Factor yesterday.
All the kids I’ve seen today had a really good time and would much prefer to do those type of activities rather than be in school.
They will be helping me run an assembly for their year group next week where we will talk about what they learnt from taking part and how much fun it was.
I appreciate the amount of work you and the others put in to organise something like this and it was a pleasure to see how the kids gained confidence and got into the whole concept during the course of the day.
Many thanks
Kevin Voller Business and Community Liaison Officer Debenham High School

Big Conversation, Lowestoft - November 2011
Hi Jenni
Well done again for yesterday, what a great day for the students....and employers for that matter.
Just to let you have the feedback from our year 9 students, I had asked each to write what they thought of their experience of the day. These were their replies;
“We learnt about working with people we didn’t know and we spoke to people about different experiences. It’s been an amazing experience and I hope to keep in touch with people I have met” xxxxxx
“We had fun learning about the different jobs available, and how to get them. Some of the jobs sounded interesting, and there were lots of opportunities, it’s a shame that the entire school couldn’t come” xxxxxx
“A great day because we learnt about how to get jobs and have fun whilst doing it” xxxxxxx
“I was pleased to find out that I had been chosen to take part in this event and learn more about job skills and other skills, and meeting Tod Sullivan (mayor of Lowestoft) and the day was amazing” xxxxxx
“I am really pleased I was chosen for this day as I enjoyed myself, learning about different skills people will need to get a good job. It was a really fun day and I learnt lots” xxxxxx
“It’s a shame the whole school couldn’t come, it was amazing and has made me think more about what I want to be when I’m older” xxxxxx
The students are keen to prepare an article for our school newsletter, and to speak in assembly about their experience and what they have learnt, I will be working with them on this, but it is great that they were so enthusiastic and want to share back in school with others.
Thanks again
Kind regards

‘We were delighted with the quality of applicants this year and interviewed 15 people for the Apprenticeship programme. We had a number of applicants that attended our March event or heard of the vacancy through the Discover Risk website, which I hope you will agree is great news. We would be pleased to get involved in another Suffolk EBP event again and I look forward to working with the EBP again.’

'We feel it’s important to build links with local education providers and young people- many of whom may potentially be our future recruits. It enables us to support young people through our employees, who also benefit from this experience. As well as mentoring we also offer support with other activities such as work experience, apprenticeships and highlighting construction as a career.’
Helen Clements, Recruitment Advisor, ISG Jackson, Ipswich
‘ISG Jackson is passionate about it's commitment to support education as it provides the means by which enthusiastic students have an interactive opportunity to understand the various roles within the construction industry. The relationship we have with schools is of mutual benefit too as it also gives us, as a business, the opportunity to highlight potential candidates for any future recruitment needs that we may have - and especially for apprentices in a wide range of roles.’

‘Leiston High School has worked closely with the Suffolk Education Business Partnership over recent years. They have supported both the school staff and students in many ways, all closely linked to Work Related Learning.
Leiston High School has itself a strong commitment to Work Related Learning and Employer Engagement, and by working together, students have been able to access a variety of projects, workshops and activities that develop their employability skills and support their curriculum.
Working with the Suffolk Education Business Partnership, a group of people who share the school’s commitment to and enthusiasm for Work Related Learning and Employer Engagement, is one of the more positive aspects of my job.’
Jill Douglass, Employer Engagement, Leiston High School
'The Wex/Wrl Forums that Suffolk EBP host provide an excellent opportunity to meet with other schools and employers to share best practice and get new ideas on how to provide this valuable service to our students.’
Kevin Voller, Business and Community Liaison Officer, Debenham High School
‘Suffolk New College has good relationships with employers, some which go back over many years. The importance for those in education and training to engage with the business community is as important now as it has ever been, as we seek to ensure the skills that students gain whilst in vocational education are a match for the industries into which they progress into, whether this be as an apprentice or as an employee.’
Natalie Chaplin, Head of Automotive, Construction & Engineering Services, Suffolk New College
‘I just wanted to send a formal thank you to all those who were actively involved in the planning and delivery of the Construction in the Built Environment event here at Suffolk New College. To employers, staff and EBP, thank you for your contributions, this event couldn't have been delivered without your commitment and engagement, and your support was really appreciated by myself and by senior management at the college.
Feedback from schools, both teachers and pupils, has been very positive, and supports the continuation of this programme, and the roll-out of similar events across other subject areas…I know that some employers were keen to be more involved across the day (which is great, so thank you!).
Thank you once again for helping to promote construction and the built environment.’

‘The opportunity to work towards a live event has given me a real insight into what it takes and will be very useful for my CV. I thought I might become a wedding planner, but my experience with the EBP has shown me how I can best use my knowledge and skills.’
